President's Report 1998-99
Southwest Chapter, AMWA

The Southwest Chapter has had a successful year, with the March 1999 membership list numbering 228.

Our meetings have been varied and have consistently drawn between 30 and 50 members:

• In July 1998, we held our "traditional" summer meeting at the Yacht Club in Galveston. Sherri Bowen and Faith McLellan led a stimulating discussion of authorship issues and controversies.
  The September 1998 meeting featured Dr. James Bowen, retired virologist, who presented an update on "Cancer Control at Century's End: Looking Back and Ahead."Approximately 50 Southwest Chapter members attended the International Conference in Vancouver. Our workshop leaders included Marianne Mallia, Susan Madigan, and Diane Callen.
  In January 1999, the chapter held its McGovern Award Lecture, delivered by honoree Anne Hudson Jones, PhD, chapter members and recipient of the John P. McGovern Award for Excellence in Medical Communication.
  The March meeting was devoted to "Understanding Clinical Trials,"
  presented by Judith Beto, PhD, RD, LD, FADA.
• In May, when we hold our annual business meeting, we will be combining that with dinner at Majors Bookstore, which specializes in technical/medical publications. There we will hear several reviews of recent books of interest to our members.

In addition, the Nominating Committee is currently hard at work preparing a slate of energetic leaders for the upcoming year. One of our goals this year was to have a web site up and running, and we hope that by the time our current group of officers turns the reins over to the next group, that goal will be reached.
